Here's something leaders in every field agree on: There is a shortage of top-flight, expertly qualified persons to fill key positions. There really is, as the saying goes, plenty of room at the top. As one executive explained, there are many almost-qualified people, but there is one success ingredient often missing. That is the ability to get things done, to get results. Which one are you? Are you an activationist or a passivationist?
Every big job- whether it be operating a business, high-level selling, in science, the military, or the government-requires a man who thinks action. Principle executives, looking for a key person, demand answers to questions like "Will he do the job?" "Will he follow through?" "Is he a self-starter?" "Can he get the results, or is he just a talker?" I know I have been tested many times being a Physical fitness trainer, Nutritionist, and Wellness coach where results and success are the bottom line. I always have to perform and go the extra mile to help my clients and customers succeed with their health and fitness goals and needs. I know the committment that takes on my side and on their side. Afterall, we are a team even when things get tough we have to push through those plateus and possible backsliding days or weeks. It is the end result that really counts.
All these questions have one aim: to find out if the fellow is a man of action.
Excellent ideas are not enough. The thought of getting healthy and fit are not enough. An only fair idea acted upon, and developed, is 100 percent better than a terrific idea that dies because it isn't followed up by action.
The great self-made merchant John Wanamaker often said, "Nothing comes merely by thinking about it."
Think of it. Everythingwe have in this world, from satelites to skyscrapers to baby food, is just an idea acted upon.
As you study people - both the successful and the just average - you find they fall into two classes. The successful are active; we'll call them activationist. The just average, the mediocre, the unsuccessful are passive. We'll call them passivationist. Again which one are you when it comes to your health and fitness goals are you a activationist or a passivationist? A doer or a "don'ter"? You can only be one or the other you choose.
We can discover a success principle by studying both groups. Mr. Activationist is a doer. He takes decisive action , gets things done, follows through on ideas and plans. Mr. Passivationist ia a "don'ter." He postpones doing things until he has proved he shouldn't or can't do them or until it's too late.
The difference between these two groups shows up in little and big things in life my friends. To aquire new good habits takes time and continuous action. Whether your having a good day or a bad day you still need to follow through with your committments to yourself and others. Remember we all have the ability to lead within us it is a choice in life no matter whether it is to become a business owner, a doctor, a priest, a teacher, or to tackle our health and fitness goals. Consider the Oriental fable about the little tiger orphaned immediately after birth, raised by a friendly herd of goats. The little tiger played with the goat kids, drank milk from the nanny goat, and slept secure in the goat's cave. Quite naturally, the little fellow came to think of himself as a goat. He did his best to bleat like a goat. He tried to cultivate a taste for grass and paper, but something inside didn't always feel quite right. One day a huge Bengal tiger came bounding into the clearing where the little tiger was playing with the goats. As the tiger roared, the goats ran for cover. The little tiger was the only "goat" who didn't race away. Instead, he felt strangley drawn to the huge, magnificent creature. When people lose weight for the first time sometimes they can't handle it because they have not excepted the new image of themselves from the inside out and they don't know how to accept it. I have watched this so many times in my career over the years how people yo-yo and self- sabotage their hard work and efforts. It is truely a matter of the inner work period! The big tiger let out a tree- shaking roar. "Why don't you roar like that?" " Never tried," thought the little tiger. He sat back on his haunches like a big tiger did, took a deep breath , and tried to roar. To his surprise he felt a rumble deep within his stomach. It grew stronger. He opened his mouth wide and the most amazing roar came out, cascading over the the jungle. From that day forward he knew he could never be a goat again. I know change is so scary at times and most of us don't want to really change we are attached to our ways, thoughts, behaviors, and habits, but for those of us who are still searching for the right answers keep reading.
You can be tiger, not a goat. A lion, not a mouse. Your big self, not your small self. You may have never tried to roar, and that's all their is to it. If you feel you are in over your head, you probably aren't. You've probably just never tried going their before. Most people have more talent and ability than they give themselves credit for. Go ahead and throw back your head and roar as loudly as you can. You'll probably surprise yourself! I believe in you even if you feel you really are in over your head literally. Certainly, no human can go through life without experiencing having only positive experiences. Optimism should be described as a habitual way of constructively explaining setbacks to yourself. Developing this habit of optimistic response will definatley help enhance your emotional well-being.

- 1. Identify a personal behavior that is holding you back or may be couterproductive.
- 2. Identify the attitudes, thoughts, and beliefs that support and produce that behavior. What is it that you believe, that causes you to do or avoid doing this particular thing?
- 3. Identify the input that has produced the belief. What were you taught? What have you heard from others? What have you experienced when it comes to work, business, weight loss, relationships, or just life performance? What has manufactured and solidified this belief?
- 4. Now, analytically and carefully question each of those sources for the belief. Are they validated by evidence or are they just opinions?Are they antiquated? Have conditions changed significantly since the idea was provided to you? Have you changed? Has your surroundings changed? Hold each individual , isolated "item" that contributed to your governing belief up to the bright light of intelligent, unemotional scrutiny.

Fruit of the Month: Pluots© and Apriums©

Pluots are complex hybrid fruits that are part plum and part apricot in heritage. These fruits were originally invented in the late 20th century by Floyd Zaiger and are now grown in parts of Washington and California. Pluots have a majority of plum parentage and therefore, have smooth skin like plums. Some varieties of pluots are sometimes called interspecific plums, or dinosaur eggs. The pluot is often confused with the aprium which is another plum and apricot hybrid with mostly apricot heritage. Like apricots, apriums have slightly fuzzy skin. Pluots and apriums are known for their sweetness and flavor; the sugar content of these fruits is much higher than that of a plum or apricot alone.

Availability
Pluot and aprium season stretches from May to September. Pluots can be found mostly in milder climates.
Selection
Pluots and apriums should be plump and firm. Avoid pluots that are green, blemished, or have broken skin.
Storage
Pluots and apriums should be ripened at room temperature and then refrigerated. Pluots can be ripened in a brown paper bag at room temperature.
Preparation
Fruit should be washed well and dried before consumption. To remove pit, cut the fruit in half. Pluots and apriums can be eaten fresh or cooked.
Varieties
Approximately 20 varieties of pluots have been developed and bred by Zaiger Genetics. Each variety contains a different percentage of plum and apricot parentage. These varieties vary in size, skin color, and flesh color. The skin can be solid, striped, or speckled and skin colors range from yellow-green to black. Pluot flesh ranges from white to red in color.
There is only one variety of aprium currently on the market. The Honey Rich interspecific is bright orange and has bright orange flesh.
Pluot varieties include:
- Candy Stripe: medium, pink-yellow striped, with very sweet and juicy flesh.
- Cherry: small, bright red skin with white flesh.
- Dapple Dandy: large sweet with pale green to yellow, red-spotted skin, red or pink juicy flesh.
- Flavorella: round, medium-sized, golden-yellow, with sweet and juicy flesh.
- Flavor Heart: very large, black with a heart shape, and yellow flesh.
- Flavor King: very sweet, medium or large, with red-purple skin and red flesh.
- Flavorosa: very sweet or tart, medium-sized, flat round dark-purple fruit with red flesh.
- Flavor Prince: large round and purple, with red flesh.
- Flavor Rich: medium-sweet, large black round fruit with orange flesh.
- Flavor Supreme: medium or large, greenish purple skin, juicy red flesh.
- Flavor Queen: large light-green to yellow, very juicy.
- Red Ray: medium, bright red with dense, sweet orange flesh.
Recipes

Confetti plum (pluot)-pasta salad
Makes 6 servings
Each serving equals 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetables

Ingredients
8 ounces corkscrew pasta
½ medium red bell pepper, cut into strips
¾ cup peeled and diced jicama
½ cup chopped red onion
8 pluots, sliced
2 Tbsp diced pimento
1 tsp finely grated fresh ginger
3 Tbsp rice or white wine vinegar
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1/8 tsp salt
1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper
Cook the pasta according to the package directions. Drain. Rinse briefly under cold water and drain. In a large bowl, toss together the pasta, red and yellow bell peppers, jicama, onion, and pluots.
In a small bowl, whisk together all the basil, pimento, ginger, vinegar, oil, salt, and pepper until blended. Drizzle the dressing over the salad and toss evenly until coated.
Nutritional analysis per serving: Calories 216, Protein 6g, Fat 3g, Calories From Fat 14%, Cholesterol 0mg, Carbohydrates 42g, Fiber 4g, Sodium 43mg.

Vegetable of the Month: Okra
Okra grows in an elongated, lantern shape vegetable. It is a fuzzy, green colored, and ribbed pod that is approximately 2-7 inches in length. This vegetable is more famously known by its rows of tiny seeds and slimy or sticky texture when cut open. Okra is also known as bamia, bindi, bhindi, lady's finger, and gumbo, is a member of the cotton (Mallow) family.
Okra was discovered around Ethiopia during the 12th century B.C. and was cultivated by the ancient Egyptians. This vegetable soon flourished throughout North Africa and the Middle East where the seed pods were consumed cooked and the seeds toasted, ground, and served as a coffee substitute. With the advent of the slave trade, it eventually came to North America and is now commonly grown in the southern United States. You’ll now see okra in African, Middle Eastern, Greek, Turkish, Indian, Caribbean, and South American cuisines.
Okra is commonly associated in Southern, Creole, and Cajun cooking since it was initially introduced into the United States in its southern region. It grows well in the southern United States where there is little frost.
Okra is a powerhouse of valuable nutrients. It is a good source of vitamin C. It is low in calories and is fat-free.

Varieties
Clemson variety is dark green with angular pods. This okra takes less than two months to mature.
Emerald type is dark green, with smooth round pods.
Lee is a spineless type known by its deep bright green, very straight angular pods.
Annie Oakley is a hybrid, spineless kind of okra with bright green, angular pods. It takes less than two months from seeding to maturity.
Chinese okra is a dark green type grown in California and reaches 10 to 13 inches in length. These extra-long okra pods are sometimes called "ladyfingers."
Purple Okra a rare variety you may see at peak times. There is a version grown for its leaves that resemble sorrel in New Guinea.
Availability, Selection, and Storage
Okra is available year-round, with a peak season during the summer months. It is available either frozen or fresh. When buying fresh okra, make sure that you select dry, firm, okra. They should be medium to dark green in color and blemish-free. Fresh okra should be used the same day that it was purchased or stored paper bag in the warmest part of the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Severe cold temperatures will speed up okra decay. Do not wash the okra pods until ready to use, or it will become slimy.
Preparation
When preparing, remember that the more it is cut, the slimier it will become. Its various uses allow for okra to be added to many different recipes. Okra is commonly used as a thicken agent in soups and stews because of its sticky core. However, okra may also be steamed, boiled, pickled, sautèed, or stir-fried whole. Okra is a sensitive vegetable and should not be cooked in pans made of iron, copper or brass since the chemical properties turns okra black.
Young Versus Mature Okra - What is the difference?
Most okra pods are ready to be harvested in less than two months of planting. If the okra is going be consumed, then these pods must be harvested when they are very young. They are usually picked when they are two to three inches long, or tender stage.
Okra pods grow quickly from the tender to tough stage. Pods are considered mature when they exceed three inches in length. Mature okra is tough and is not recommended for use in certain recipes.
How do I reduce okra slime?
Most people who have eaten or have cooked okra, know about the okra slime. Some recipes call for the whole okra, but how do you deal with the okra slime?
There are few ways to minimize the slime:
- Simply trim the off the ends and avoid puncturing the okra capsule.
- You can also minimize the slime factor by avoiding the tendency to overcook okra.
Recipes
Okra and Green Beans
Makes 6 servings

Ingredients
1 lb okra, uncut
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, diced
1 lb fresh green beans
2 large garlic cloves, crushed then chopped
1 cup water
½ tsp salt
½ tsp ground pepper
1 6-ounce can tomato paste
Wash okra pods, trim stems, do not remove caps. Rinse well and drain. Wash beans and cut into 3 inch lengths. Combine water, tomato paste, olive oil, onion, garlic, salt and pepper in a sauce pan and mix well. Heat, stirring frequently, until mixture comes to boil. Add okra and beans and additional water if necessary to almost cover vegetables.
Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer gently until vegetables are crisp-tender, 20 to 30 minutes. Serve it warm or cold.
*This dish can also be oven-baked. Instead of simmering, lightly cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes at 350°F.
